Dr Ibiwunmi Oluokun
Championing Effective Primary Healthcare Delivery and Reform
“Since I completed the Aig PLP, I have had numerous opportunities to lead improvement initiatives in my place of assignment and on a larger scale at the Health District level. I have become an ambassador of positive change, a role model, and a mentor to many of my colleagues and subordinates supporting them to deliver public service more effectively.”- Dr Ibiwunmi Olokun, a 2023 Aig PLP Alumnus.
Dr Ibiwunmi Olokun serves as a Medical Officer of Health and Primary Health Care Coordinator at the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board. She is currently pursuing a Master of Public Policy (MPP) at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford.
Reflecting on her experience with the Aig Public Leaders Programme (Aig PLP), Dr Ibiwunmi shares how the programme has modelled her into an ambassador of change within the primary healthcare sector. “I have had numerous opportunities to lead improvement initiatives in my place of assignment and on a larger scale at the Health District level,” she says.
Dr Ibiwunmi’s reform project targets reducing patient waiting time in the outpatient clinic of the Primary Healthcare Centre she coordinates. Remarkably, the project achieved a significant reduction in patient waiting time from an average of 82 minutes to below 30 minutes within three months of implementation.
As a result of the success of the project, the initiative is being replicated in other units within the PHC and similar PHCs in the Health District. Similarly, the methodology from her reform project has been adopted for the quality improvement program in the Health District.
Dr Ibiwunmi commends the Aig Public Leaders Programme for equipping her with the skills and knowledge to model and impact positive change. “I have become an ambassador of positive change, a role model, and a mentor to many of my colleagues and subordinates supporting them to deliver public service more effectively.”
