Commander Madu Ibrahim

Fostering Positive Non-Informal Behaviours within the Navy

Commander Madu Ibrahim, a certified helicopter pilot and flight instructor with the Nigerian Navy, and a 2023 AIG PLP alumnus, says, "The AIG Public Leadership Programme was instrumental in equipping me with the skills and knowledge to drive positive change within the Nigerian Navy. The program's focus on strategic leadership, ethical decision-making, and effective communication has significantly enhanced my ability to lead my team and contribute to the organisation's success”.

Commander Madu Ibrahim currently serves as a helicopter pilot and Certified Flight Instructor at the Naval Air Base Ojo, Lagos, where he is responsible for planning and executing flight missions and mentoring younger pilots. His desire to improve his leadership capabilities and drive positive change within the Nigerian Navy inspired him to apply for the AIG Public Leaders Programme.

Reflecting on his experience, Commander Ibrahim notes how the programme exceeded his expectations. “Learning from case studies, faculty experiences, and other participants has profoundly impacted my leadership journey. Since completing the programme, I have seen significant career advancements, particularly in strategic leadership, which has equipped me to lead more effectively.”

Commander Ibrahim’s reform project focuses on fostering positive non-informal behaviours within the Navy, aimed at strengthening the relationships between superiors and subordinates. By raising awareness of value-based leadership in the 21st-century environment, his initiative has contributed to enhancing professionalism and efficiency within the Navy. Surveys conducted post-presentation have shown 100% of participants report a deeper understanding of leadership dynamics and a willingness to implement the lessons learned.

In addition to his work within the Navy, Commander Ibrahim has extended his leadership insights to other sectors, volunteering with NGOs such as the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation and the Start-Up Knowledge Development Foundation, where he has contributed to leadership development and entrepreneurship.

Commander Ibrahim credits the AIG Public Leaders Programme for equipping him with the skills and network to make a lasting impact. "The programme has not only enhanced my leadership capabilities but has also strengthened my professional network, opening doors to collaborations both locally and internationally; providing me with the opportunity to contribute to global discussions on public service.”
